Join us tomorrow at 7:30 at the Flying Saucer in Raleigh!

We're kicking off Pop The Cap v2 with Dale Katechis of Oskar Blues Restaurant and Brewery in Lyons, Colorado. You may know Dale from the eponymous Dale's Pale Ale, which has revolutionized the craft beer industry with its canned beer.

Here's a Wall Street Journal article featuring both Oskar Blues and North Carolina's own Top of the Hill restaurant and brewery.

Join us at the Flying Saucer in Raleigh tomorrow (Thursday 3/30) around 7:30 to sample Dale's Pale Ale and enjoy complimentary food!

Pop The Cap will have a tent at the World Beer Fesitval in Raleigh, set for April 29th (Moore Square, downtown Raleigh). Our plan is to show off rare and not-yet-found-in-North-Carolina beers, and have you meet a few of the brewers.

Since we buy the beer at wholesale cost, there's a small charge for these samples and meet-and-greet sessions. Money from this event will go toward our restaurant and retail education campaigns.

For those interested, here' s the rest of the story surrounding Pop The Cap version 2.

Last month, my wife and I ate at a fancy Durham restaurant...a place that prides itself as a great place for wine. Naturally, I was interested in what beers they had,.and I was thrilled to see Chimay and Duvel at the bar. However, my excitement turned to frustration when the bartender prepared to serve the Duvel in chilled pilsner glasses.

It was then that I realized I shouldn't step down from Pop The Cap -- that North Carolina needs a group to help advocate for better beer in the state. Thankfully, we have a group of committed volunteers who, like me, are excited to help pull off beer events, tastings and education.

Our mission becomes two-fold: to work with restaurants to ensure they serve craft beer with diginity and smarts, and to encourage consumers like you to not tolerate such a poor display of beer knowledge.

Pop The Cap pledges that this education will not be boorish or haughty. We'll have fun spreading the word of good beer. Join us tomorrow and April 29 to see what we mean!

We're back from our break! Thanks for being patient as we figure out what PTCv2 is all about.

Our mission, in its most simple form:

To elevate craft beer culture in North Carolina.

You can infer many things from this most basic mission statement. I'll break the mission down into two key parts:

1) to elevate. We recognize that beer has a long way to go before it enjoys the status and respect of wine. Recall that our biggest opposition, Senator John Kerr, was a key sponsor in the wine industy' s state billboard campaign!

2) craft beer culture. Our love and passion is for artisan beer, with a priority toward North Carolina beer. We just aren't passionate about mass-market lagers; they certainly don't need our advocacy.

Nearly three years after our founding, we have yet to see any trade association or interest group advocate for craft beer in North Carolina. Thus, we are compelled to make it our mission. We invite you along in our quest to educate and celebrate.

We plan to execute this mission primarily through beer festivals and restaurant education. At this point, we are not offering membership or dues. Revenues will come from our events, supporting our mission of craft beer education. (We worried that membership fees would set high expectations, and we want to start off PTCv2 on the right foot).

Finally, you'll notice that our mission is not to lift the new 15% cap on beer. We believe there's much more to overcome to educate North Carolinians about craft beer. We believe this is a challenge far more fulfilling than trying once again to remove a cap on beer.

We hope you're as excited as we are. As always, we invite your comments and suggestions. Feel free to write me at any time.
